The Priority is to Smash Up Team Black - 158 Shane Davies Talks

30/01/2012 20:19

158 Shane Davies is captain of the Condoms and the anticipated battle between the Blacks and the Condoms looks like being one of the highlights of the Unlimited Banger Icebreaker. Below is an extract of an interview with the full interview appearing in the Raceday programme....

158 Shane Davies - Looking for a successful day at the Norfolk Arena on Sunday.

Are you and the team looking forward to your first Kings Lynn Icebreaker?

Yes we are all looking forward to it. It’s been five or six years since I have been to race at King’s Lynn and I haven’t done an Icebreaker since 1998 at Swaffham so it’s well over due.

What made you and the boys enter the event?

It was Danny Sutton who said he wanted to do it. He did both events last year and really enjoyed it and said to me he thought we should do it. We haven’t done it in the past because of the bad weather but we thought we would do it this year and of course it was just a big bonus when we heard team black had entered.

The hype and tension between you and Team Black seems to always be at boiling point - why is the rivalry so intense?

I don’t really know to be honest. Jack and I are the only originals left on each side from when it all started and we have both had new drivers come through and they carry it on and it’s just good to smash each other up.

Where and why did it all start?

Well at the time my dad was battling with them and in my first meeting back in 1996 I turned it around and did Overy head on and it has just continued from there.

So it’s not just personal between the two teams?

No but if any driver wants to join the team the first thing I tell them is that they must be prepared and it is on the understanding that smashing up Team Black is the team’s top priority. They have to accept that they will get grief. I don’t want anyone in the team that when push comes to shove they tell me that they get on with Team Black because that is what our priority is first and foremost to beat Team Black.

Do all the boys know there job for Sunday and will you be looking to win?

No we are not going to win. We are going to have fun and to do Team Black - but you never can tell. If the opportunity arises for one of our teams to have a crack at the top honours then we will do all we can to protect them but we are going to get Team Black.

Are there any other teams you will be looking out for?

No I think we have enough on our plate with the Blacks, but there have been one or two drivers who have had pot shots at us in the past and if the opportunity arises then maybe we can do something but there are no other teams we are out for.

Finally have you a message for Team Black and the other teams ahead of the event?

I just hope they keep it friendly of the track, and play to the rules on it!
